Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) binder emulsion. The elastic half of the standard aqueous anode binder system. SBR provides adhesion and flexibility while CMC provides viscosity and dispersion; together they replace PVDF/NMP and remove solvent recovery from the electrode coating line entirely.

Properties

Property Value
Type Styrene-butadiene rubber, aqueous emulsion
Appearance Milky white latex
Carrier Water
Function Adhesion and mechanical flexibility
Normally paired with Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)
Typical CMC:SBR ratio 1:1 to 1:2 by dry weight
Typical total binder 1.5–3 wt% of dry electrode

Full specification and lot-specific Certificate of Analysis available on request.

Binder system comparison

System Solvent Typical use Advantage Trade-off
CMC + SBR Water Graphite and Si anodes No solvent recovery, low cost, safe Not for water-sensitive actives
PVDF NMP Cathodes, some anodes Wide electrochemical window Toxic solvent, recovery cost
PAA / PAA-Na Water High-silicon anodes Tolerates large volume change Brittle if over-dried
LA132 / LA133 Water Cathodes and anodes Aqueous cathode processing Narrower supply base

Why CMC and SBR are used together

Neither works alone. CMC is a stiff, water-soluble polymer that controls slurry viscosity and keeps graphite dispersed, but a CMC-only electrode is brittle and cracks on calendering. SBR is a soft latex that bonds particles elastically, but on its own it does not build viscosity and the slurry settles. The combination gives a coatable slurry and a flexible electrode, at roughly a third of the binder loading a PVDF system would need.

Applications

  • Aqueous graphite anode slurries
  • Silicon and silicon–graphite anodes, where flexibility matters most
  • Water-based LFP cathode slurries
  • Binder loading reduction studies
  • NMP-free electrode process development

Handling

Add SBR last, after the CMC solution and active material are fully dispersed, and mix at low shear. High shear coagulates the latex into visible specks that will not redisperse. Do not freeze — freezing irreversibly breaks the emulsion. Store cool and use within the stated shelf life.
