N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), battery grade. The standard solvent for PVDF binder systems and the default medium for cathode slurry preparation. NMP dissolves PVDF readily, has a high boiling point that gives a wide coating window, and evaporates cleanly during drying.

Binder system comparison

System Solvent Typical use Advantage Trade-off
CMC + SBR Water Graphite and Si anodes No solvent recovery, low cost, safe Not for water-sensitive actives
PVDF NMP Cathodes, some anodes Wide electrochemical window Toxic solvent, recovery cost
PAA / PAA-Na Water High-silicon anodes Tolerates large volume change Brittle if over-dried
LA132 / LA133 Water Cathodes and anodes Aqueous cathode processing Narrower supply base

Applications

  • Dissolving PVDF binder for cathode slurries
  • NCM, NCA and LFP electrode coating
  • Electrode recovery and delamination for material recycling
  • Cleaning PVDF residue from mixing and coating equipment
  • Polymer and membrane casting

Why water content matters

NMP is fully miscible with water and hygroscopic. Water carried into a cathode slurry reacts with residual lithium on nickel-rich surfaces, raises pH and gels the PVDF, and any that survives drying attacks LiPF₆ electrolyte in the finished cell. Keep containers sealed, do not leave open to the atmosphere, and use a fresh bottle for critical work.

Safety

NMP is classified as a reproductive toxicant (EU H360D — may damage the unborn child) and is restricted under REACH with occupational exposure limits in the EU and elsewhere. Use in a fume hood with nitrile gloves and eye protection, and confirm your local exposure limits before handling. Many laboratories are moving to aqueous binder systems specifically to eliminate it. Read the safety data sheet before ordering.
