Natural vs artificial graphite

Natural graphite gives higher capacity and lower cost per amp-hour, because its crystal structure is closer to ideal. Artificial graphite cycles longer and tolerates fast charge better, because its more disordered structure resists exfoliation. Most commercial anodes blend the two. Start with natural graphite when energy density and cost drive the design, artificial when cycle life does.

Applications

  • Lithium-ion anode coating and half-cell testing
  • Coin, pouch and cylindrical cell prototyping
  • Blending with silicon oxide or artificial graphite
  • Energy-density-driven cell development
  • Electrolyte and additive screening against a high-capacity anode

Handling

Store sealed and dry. Graphite is hygroscopic; dry before slurry preparation if the container has been open. The magnetic impurity level is only preserved if the powder is kept away from steel scoops and unlined mills.
