Ketjenblack ECP-600JD conductive carbon black. A high-structure, high-surface-area carbon black that reaches percolation at a fraction of the loading needed for conventional acetylene black. Less conductive additive means more room for active material, which is why it is used where every percent of electrode volume counts.

Typical properties

Property Typical value
Type High-structure conductive carbon black
Appearance Black powder
BET surface area ~1400 m²/g
Structure Highly branched aggregate chains
Typical loading 0.5–2 wt% of dry electrode
Comparison Reaches percolation at roughly one third the loading of acetylene black

Full specification and lot-specific Certificate of Analysis available on request.

Conductive additive comparison

Additive Surface area Typical loading Network Best for
Super P / acetylene black 60–80 m²/g 2–5 wt% Point contact General purpose, low cost
Ketjenblack EC-600JD ~1400 m²/g 0.5–2 wt% High-structure chains Low loading, high conductivity
Multi-wall CNT 150–250 m²/g 0.5–2 wt% Short fibre bridges Rate performance
Single-wall CNT 300–500 m²/g 0.02–0.2 wt% Long flexible network Silicon anodes, thick electrodes
Graphene — 0.5–2 wt% Sheet contact Surface coverage

Applications

  • Conductive additive for NCM, NCA and LFP cathodes
  • High-loading and thick electrode formulations
  • Binder and additive loading reduction studies
  • Supercapacitor and fuel cell electrodes
  • Conductive polymer and coating formulations

Working with high-structure carbon

The same branched structure that makes Ketjenblack conductive at low loading also makes it absorb a lot of solvent. Slurry viscosity rises sharply with small additions, so expect to increase solvent or reduce solids content compared with an acetylene black formulation. It also disperses slowly: allow extended high-shear mixing before adding the active material, or agglomerates will survive into the coating and show up as local hot spots. The high surface area consumes more electrolyte forming SEI, so first-cycle efficiency drops if you overload it.

Handling

Very low bulk density and easily airborne. Weigh in a fume hood or enclosure, wear a dust mask, and expect a large volume for a small mass. Store sealed and dry.
