Water-based single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) dispersion, 0.4 wt%. A ready-to-use aqueous conductive additive for lithium-ion electrodes. SWCNTs form a long, flexible conductive network at loadings one to two orders of magnitude below carbon black, which frees up electrode volume for active material and maintains contact as the electrode expands during cycling.

Why single-wall nanotubes

Additive Typical loading Network type Effect on cycling
Carbon black 2–5 wt% Point-to-point contact Network breaks as electrode expands
Multi-wall CNT 0.5–2 wt% Short fibre bridges Better than carbon black, still rigid
Single-wall CNT 0.02–0.2 wt% Long flexible network Maintains contact through expansion

The practical benefit is largest where the electrode moves most: silicon and silicon–graphite anodes, thick high-loading electrodes, and nickel-rich cathodes prone to particle cracking.

Applications

  • Aqueous anode slurries with CMC/SBR binder
  • Silicon and silicon–graphite anodes where expansion breaks conventional networks
  • Thick, high-loading electrodes for energy-dense cells
  • Replacing or reducing carbon black to free electrode volume
  • Water-based cathode processing

Handling

This is a non-Newtonian fluid: it is both pseudoplastic and thixotropic, so viscosity depends on shear rate and on shear history. Stir gently before use and keep mixing conditions consistent between batches, or apparent viscosity will vary between otherwise identical slurries. Do not freeze. Add to the slurry under moderate shear rather than high-speed dispersion, which can shorten the nanotubes and undo the network advantage.
