Why the spring matters

Graphite expands roughly 10% on lithiation and silicon composites can exceed 30%. As the electrode breathes, a rigid stack develops gaps at the electrode–separator interface. The spring absorbs that movement and keeps contact pressure constant, which is why cells built without one show erratic capacity and rising impedance long before the active material has actually degraded.

Coin cell stack order

A standard CR2032 assembly runs, from the negative case upward: negative case, spring (wave washer), spacer disc, lithium or anode disc, separator, electrolyte, cathode disc, positive case. The spring keeps the stack under constant compression as the electrodes breathe during cycling; without it, contact resistance rises and results scatter.

Handling

Fit the spring against the negative case, below the spacer. Keep orientation and crimp pressure identical across a test batch; a spring installed inverted changes stack height and shifts the result.
