Jar material comparison

Material Hardness Density Contamination risk Breakable Best for
Zirconia High 6.0 g/cm³ Lowest Yes High-purity, battery, electronic ceramics
Alumina Very high 3.6 g/cm³ Al₂O₃ pickup Yes Hard, abrasive minerals and ceramics
Agate High 2.6 g/cm³ SiO₂ pickup Yes Geology, small-batch high-purity
Stainless steel Moderate 7.9 g/cm³ Fe, Cr, Ni No Metals, alloys, mechanical alloying
Tungsten carbide Highest 14.9 g/cm³ W, Co Chips Very hard samples, short cycles
PTFE Very low 2.2 g/cm³ Effectively none No Corrosive media, inert milling
Polyurethane Very low 1.2 g/cm³ Trace polymer No Soft samples, gentle roller milling

Roller vs planetary milling

A roller (jar) mill turns the jar on horizontal rollers, so the media cascades under gravity. A planetary mill spins the jar on a rotating carrier, generating several g of centrifugal force. Planetary mills grind far faster and reach finer particle sizes; roller mills are gentler, quieter, cheaper to run and handle much larger batch volumes. Choose a roller mill for bulk homogenising, slurry mixing and overnight runs where speed is not the constraint.

Applications

  • Bulk grinding of metals, alloys and minerals
  • Mechanical alloying and powder blending
  • Ceramic and catalyst raw material preparation
  • Air-sensitive work under inert atmosphere
  • High-volume sample preparation

Choosing stainless steel

Steel jars and steel media introduce iron, chromium and nickel into the sample. For battery materials, catalysts, electronic ceramics or anything where trace metals affect the measurement, use zirconia or PTFE. Where a little iron is acceptable, steel is the most robust and economical option, and the only one you can drop without consequence.
