NCM811 cathode powder, polycrystalline (LiNi₀.₈Co₀.₁Mn₀.₁O₂). The high-nickel end of the NCM range, delivering close to 200 mAh/g with minimal cobalt. Polycrystalline morphology gives higher rate capability than single-crystal grades; the trade is more particle cracking under high-voltage cycling.

Cathode chemistry comparison

Cathode Capacity Avg. voltage Thermal stability Cycle life Cobalt Best for
LFP (LiFePO₄) 150–160 mAh/g 3.2 V Excellent Excellent None Storage, long life, safety
NCM523 155–165 mAh/g 3.7 V Good Good Moderate Balanced cost and performance
NCM622 175–185 mAh/g 3.7 V Moderate Good Lower High energy, workable stability
NCM811 195–210 mAh/g 3.7 V Lower Moderate Low Maximum energy density
NCA 190–210 mAh/g 3.7 V Lower Good Low High energy and high power

NCM is also written NMC; both refer to lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide. Rising nickel content raises capacity and cuts cobalt cost, but reduces thermal stability and increases moisture sensitivity — that trade-off is the whole story of cathode selection.

Polycrystalline vs single crystal

Polycrystalline particles are agglomerates of small primary grains, which gives high surface area and strong rate performance. Under repeated high-voltage cycling those grain boundaries crack, exposing fresh surface to electrolyte and driving capacity fade. Single-crystal NCM811 resists that cracking and cycles longer, but delivers lower rate capability and needs higher calendering pressure. Choose polycrystalline for rate and power studies, single crystal for cycle life.

Applications

  • High-energy EV cell development
  • Rate capability and fast-charge studies
  • Cathode coating and doping research
  • Cobalt reduction programmes
  • Benchmarking against NCM622 and NCA

Handling nickel-rich cathodes

Nickel-rich powders are hygroscopic and alkaline. Moisture pickup forms surface LiOH and Li₂CO₃, which raises pH, gels PVDF slurries and generates gas in the finished cell. Store sealed, weigh out quickly, and handle in dry air or a glovebox where possible. Never leave an open container on the bench overnight.
