Alumina ceramic (corundum) planetary mill jar, 50ml. Corundum is α-alumina, second only to diamond among common minerals for hardness. It grinds hard and abrasive samples faster than any other jar in this range, at roughly a third the cost of zirconia.

Why alumina

  • Extremely hard, so it grinds abrasive minerals and ceramics efficiently
  • High temperature and corrosion resistance
  • Much lower cost than zirconia for non-critical purity work

Handling

Alumina is hard but brittle. It chips or cracks if dropped or knocked against a bench edge, so support the jar with both hands when loading and unloading. Where toughness matters more than hardness, zirconia is the more forgiving ceramic.

Choosing alumina

Alumina wears faster than zirconia and the debris is Al₂O₃. If aluminium is a contaminant in your system, or you need the lowest possible pickup, choose zirconia.
