CR2016 20 mm 1.6 mm Thin cells, limited loading
CR2025 20 mm 2.5 mm Standard half-cell testing
CR2032 20 mm 3.2 mm The lab default — most headroom for electrode and separator
CR2430 24 mm 3.0 mm Larger electrode area, higher capacity per cell

Coin cell stack order

A standard CR2032 assembly runs, from the negative case upward: negative case, spring (wave washer), spacer disc, lithium or anode disc, separator, electrolyte, cathode disc, positive case. The spring keeps the stack under constant compression as the electrodes breathe during cycling; without it, contact resistance rises and results scatter.

304 vs 316L — which to choose

304 is the general-purpose choice and covers most graphite, LFP and NCM work below about 4.3 V. 316L adds molybdenum, which resists pitting from fluoride species generated when LiPF₆ electrolyte degrades. If you cycle above 4.3 V, run elevated temperature, or see case discolouration and rising impedance on long tests, move to 316L.

Applications

  • Half-cell testing against lithium metal
  • Full-cell prototyping of new cathode and anode formulations
  • Electrolyte and additive screening
  • Rate capability and long-cycle studies
  • Teaching and training laboratories

Handling

Assemble in a dry room or argon glovebox. Even brief air exposure introduces moisture that reacts with LiPF₆ electrolyte to form HF, which attacks the case and corrupts results. Crimp at a consistent pressure — inconsistent crimping is the most common source of cell-to-cell scatter.
