Sintered zirconium silicate (SZS) grinding media, 4.0–5.0 mm. Coarse-grinding media for ball mills and primary dispersion. Higher density than alumina and stronger than ZTA at ≥1,400 N crushing strength, at a fraction of the cost of stabilized zirconia. At this bead size the added crushing strength matters most, since impact loading per collision is highest.

Applications

Compatible Equipment
Ball mills, roll mills, and attritors. Suitable for wet and dry milling. For intermediate and fine dispersion, use 2.5–2.8 mm media instead.
Where SZS Fits
Zirconium silicate sits between alumina and stabilized zirconia. It grinds harder and lasts longer than alumina, and costs far less than zirconia, but its lower density limits energy transfer in high-viscosity systems, and it is not suitable where zirconium, aluminum, or silicon contamination is a specification. For battery materials, electronic ceramics, or pharmaceuticals, use yttria- or ceria-stabilized zirconia.
